Devour up troubles lyrics12/30/2023 ![]() I wanted to show that I’m a solid artist and that I’m here to stay,” the rapper said in an interview at the time with Spin magazine. “One of the most frustrating things for me was people saying I needed to swear to sell records. Its lyrics now took aim more at his own dirty laundry than that of the star system. The song titles, like “ Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” reflect the album’s self-referential character. The rapper even declared that his album “was written by Jim Carrey,” the protagonist of the drama in which a normal man unknowingly lives in a reality television program watched by millions. The album’s title could be read as a counterpart to The Slim Shady Show, but it was primarily inspired by the movie The Truman Show (1998). Satirizing his own fame and his character, Eminem conceived of The Eminem Show, which was leaked to the public at the end of May 2002 and is now turning 20. With the upcoming release of his own semi-biographical film, the critical and commercial hit 8 Mile (2002), the rapper decided to make a public spectacle of his circumstances. After insulting pop stars like Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys in his songs, the character–who even had his own cartoon series, The Slim Shady Show–now threatened to devour its creators.Įminem later reflected that his life at that time had turned into a circus. The Slim Shady character was a loudmouth, satirical version, and it got Mathers into constant trouble, bringing him significant public notoriety. The musician, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, had followed his first EP, The Slim Shady EP (1997) with the album The Slim Shady LP (1999) as a way to counter criticism of the serious, dramatic tone of his debut album, Infinite (1996). The rapper’s alter ego was taking him down the wrong path. "All alone he turns to stone/While holding his breath half to death/Terrified of what's inside/To save his life/He crawls like a worm from a bird."īilly Pilgrim is scared of all that's going on but at the same time has accepted it because there's no other option for him.Īs for the crawling like a worm from a bird, this is just a great image for those who are trying to escape from a horrible fate but they, like the worms, know that running is useless, that the bird will find them however, the worm will fight for as long as it can before it's overtaken.By 2002, Eminem needed to get rid of Slim Shady. ![]() Most people in the novel write Billy Pilgrim off as completely nutty because he "disappears" in the middle of battle (lights on, but nobody's home), so he sometimes feels like he's going crazy while he knows that the time-warp he's experiencing is very real to his mind. "Out of his mind the way pushes him, whispering/Must have been out of his mind/Midday delusions of pushing this out of his head/Make him out of his mind (out of his mind)." This could be a reference to the coldness of war where all you have is yourself and the enemy merely kills you on sight because that's all that they know. "He wears his heart safety pinned to his backpack/His backpack is all that he knows/Shot down by strangers whose glances can cripple the heart/And devour the soul." So I feel that maybe the song is based on the novel, because the main character Billy Pilgrim is on his own because there's no one who quite understands what he's going on about. The line "so it goes" is used whenever a person dies or a death is mentioned, basically giving a nonchalant reaction to death. "So it goes" is a famous like from Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse Five" about this man who basically travels through time (Tralfamadores, the aliens who abduct him, see life all at once instead of in time order like we do). "All he knows/If he can't relieve it, it grows/So it goes." I like the idea that this is about a paranoid schizophrenic. This struggle threatens to become the end of him, he hears whispers that tell him to jump… whispers from his other side? He is drowning in this fight, and losing his mind… even though his escape from the “bird” is ultimately in order to save his sanity. It is not strong, but it is the only part of the truth that he still has. His heart is still there, but only just with the help of a few safety pins. The back pack that is all that he knows, suggests how he has simplified his life to nothing more than what he can carry ( literally and figuratively). He is paranoid and anxious from the glimpses that he sees, he must keep away from the truth and pain so that he can try live. ![]() Yet this is making him feel crazy, because it is a constant battle to avoid oneself. The bird is the side of himself he is avoiding in order to survive – that person is darker and carries more pain. He fears the deeper side of himself, and therefore keeps in isolation and does not live as his whole true self, the bit of him that does exist is weaker and has no pride, like a worm in the dirt. ![]()
